My Birth Story - Part 2
So there I was waiting to go to the OR. The contractions were coming often and they were painful but I was still staying as calm as I could manage and breathing thru each one. FINALLY they came to get me and bring me to the OR. I sat on the edge of the operating table and the anesthesia guy numbed my back and then when it was good and numb he injected that sweet sweet epidural. No wonder women beg for the epidural, it was like instant relief of the pain. I was SO happy to not have to feel the contractions anymore. They had me lay down real quick so that the epidural could take full effect and numb me from right below my boobs down to my toes. Although the epidural numbed from the bottom up, so my toes and legs got numb first and then it worked its way up.
Once I was fully numb, they put up a big blue surgical sheet, which smelled AWFUL and the operation began. I couldn't feel anything except for some pressure and pulling type feelings but no pain. The woman named Rya was right at my head the whole time checking in every few minutes to make sure I was doing okay. She was awesome! She kept me relaxed and focused the entire time. She was my 'go to' girl if i was feeling something weird. I held my husbands hand the entire time. I had been looking at the ceiling and taking it all in when then, at 4:48pm, it happened. The first cry from my baby boy!!! I immediately started crying when I heard his first cry. I was so overwhelmed with joy. My husband went over and cut the umbilical cord and took the first pictures of our baby. It was crazy to think that we had created this life together and we finally welcomed our first child into this world.
Once they got the baby all cleaned up and bundled up they brought him over to me so I could see him and give him kisses. He looked just like me! They told me he was 10 pounds and 6 ounces and measured at 20 1/2 inches long! They were right, he was over 10 pounds! While I was basking in the happiness, the doctors closed me up and got me ready to head to the recovery room.
Once I was in recovery, they checked on the baby and on me, and I felt so tired. All I wanted to do was sleep at that point but I was too excited to sleep.
My husband was by my side the entire time and I was so thankful he was right there to support me. Little did we know, MUCH more was about to happen. We thought we were in the recovery phase and we would go to a room in the maternity ward soon but that wasn't what was in store quite yet.
