thoughts of the day
So I have been reading a lot of the posts in a few of the moms groups I am on, on FB.
And, I find it interesting that some people ask certain questions and/or give certain answers. Obviously when hundreds of people are on ONE facebook page, there are bound to be MANY different opinions and views.
One thing that I found interesting was that a mom asked when others moms started putting cereal in the baby's bottle.........what?! I was a bit taken back by this because this is SUCH an old recommendation...like legit this is what they told our parents 25+ years ago. It has since been deemed a choking hazard and is not recommended. Of course there are people who put cereal in the bottle and to each their own... but I was surprised that pediatricians are recommending this?!! Which calls into question what kind of advice the various pediatricians are giving?
Another mother responded to a post and stated that she chose formula over breastfeeding and her milk didn't come in for 10 days anyways.
I still for the life of me cannot wrap my head around the idea that a mother would willingly choose less than the best for their child?! We've heard it a bazillion times that breast is best. But it's not about being the best. It is about the optimal nutrition for you baby. It is about giving them THE healthiest option. It is about providing them with antibodies. It's about giving then the best choice there is. Yet, there are mothers, who have a milk supply, who choose not to use it. WHY?! I just don't get it. at all. If you could give your baby the best nutrition possible, why wouldn't you?!!!
Some mothers cannot breastfeed, physically, etc... and I get it. But wouldn't you try every possible method of delivering breast milk before you chose formula? If you can't breastfeed...there is pumping.... if you don't have enough milk, why not give as much breast milk as you can and then formula? And then, if all else fails, there is formula. And thankfully we do have formula this day in age and that IS an option. But, in my mind, it should not be the first choice.
I remember pumping around the clock. I remember trying SO hard to get my son to latch and latch properly. I remember when he FINALLY successfully breastfed it was like the skies opened up and the angels sang a beautiful song and I thought: we are doing it! we are really doing it! this is amazing! and now, it is SO easy. He can latch himself if he is close enough! Breastfeeding is second nature now and I am so thankful!
I guess I will just never understand why someone would choose second best when they had the best choice at their fingertips. I don't get why a parent would choose not to give their child the optimal nutritional start to life when they had so many resources available.
I guess this is just my rambling thoughts of the day.
