breastfeeding in church
I recently stumbled upon this story and I was SO happy reading it.
I already loved our new Pope, and this just reconfirmed for me everything great I already thought of him. He has done so much already that shows he is like no other and this was equally as awesome.
There is this idea out there that breastfeeding and church don't mix and I am not qute sure why.
I have always had this idea in my head that breastfeeding in church was a no-no. You shouldn't do it. but why?! I am not sure where I personally got this idea from or how it was planted into my thoughts but it was there. Other people think it to as many have said that Church is one public place that breastfeeding is not okay. Maybe it's because breastfeeding in church is considered inappropriate? Because you are exposing your breast? But, breastfeeding isn't about exposing yourself and mothers who breastfeed are not trying to expose themselves....so what is it? Maybe because of the close proximity to others? It could make other church goers uncomfortable? But really, let's be honest, all you are doing is feeding your baby... so why is it that there is an idea floating around that breastfeeding in church shouldn't happen? I am still not sure of the exact reason. I vaugely recall reading it somewhere, potentially when I was looking up the laws about public breastfeeding? I have no clue if that is it or not though.
Anyways, When I saw this article my heart warmed I was so ecstatic that I thought to myslef: YES. finally. An acknowledgement! An answer of sorts! The POPE is OKAY with breastfeeding in church. And, if he is okay with it, than I no longer think that it is wrong!
Having the Pope say out loud that breastfeeding in church is okay takes away all the negative ideas surrounding it, or at least for me it does. I feel like I have been freed from this idea that breastfeeding in church is unacceptable. Now, with the Pope's blessing, it is acceptable! I hope that is truly IS accepted in all churches, everywhere because these mothers truly are just feeding their babies.
