Pacifiers.

So this morning, while watching The Today Show, as I do everyday, I watched a segment about a new childrens book that was written by a Latin singer named Thalia, and the book is called Chupie!

Here is the link to the segement.

As you will see in the segment, she desperately was trying to break her daughters habit with her pacifier and the idea for the book was born.

After seeing this segment, it got me thinking about binkies, as they are commonly referred to. I have always been OK with the idea of a pacifier. I always assumed my baby would use one and in the back of my mind I knew it would be a process to break the habit of using one.

Shortly after my son was born, the hospital nurses popped a binkie into his mouth to soothe him and he was hooked. It is a common practice, the use of pacifiers, and unless you make is known that you do not want them to use a binkie, they do it without asking. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but if you are against pacifiers, you have to be sure to tell them. I know there are some parents who would rather not use a pacifier, and I wonder how that works out while in the hospital setting.

When my son was transferred to the NICU, I was extremely thankful for pacifiers. The use of the binkie was a savior. In the NICU they had little cups of sugar water, and they would dip the binkie in the sugar water, put it in his mouth, and he was instantly calm. This technique was especially helpful during his various medical procedures. Doing the sugar water pacifier put us at ease during these big procedures.

We continued the use of binkies when we got home and then slowly but surely, our son weaned himself off of the binkie completely. He used it less and less and he continuously would pop it out of his mouth until one day, he just did not need to use it at all. I think this happened alongside me starting to breastfeed him more successfully. As he breastfed more and in a better way, he needed the binkie less.

Now, I am SO thankful that we do not have to go through the process of weaning our son off of the binkie...it is something that has already happened and something we dont need to worry about in the future.
