After Birth Story
So, there I was, lying in the recovery room, very tired but very happy at the same time. I had the BEST nurse! Her name was Leah and I was the only patient in recovery so I pretty much had her 1 on 1 and that was so helpful and I appreciated everything she was doing for me.
She was checking me and realized I was bleeding quite a bit so she called the Dr back in and the Dr didn't like how much I was bleeding so she decided to do a procedure to stop the bleeding that involved inserting what they called a balloon to keep my uterus contracted. The epidural was still numbing me so thankfully they were able to get the balloon in while the epidural was still in effect. I was also given more Pitocin which is an IV fluid to contract the uterus. So the Dr said: "oh this should work, it usually works for everyone. this combo should do the trick"...so me and my husband were worried about the bleeding but we were confident in this treatment combination. I thought everything was under control when all the sudden i felt a huge gush. I called Leah over and I was bleeding badly so she called the Dr and the Dr said we needed to do an emergency surgery to get the bleeding under control. I was having a hemorrhage and the balloon and pitocin combo didnt work so I needed a surgery to see what was going on. The Dr told me that the worst thing they would have to do would be to perform a hysterectomy.
When I heard that I thought for sure that I would be coming out with a hysterectomy. I was beginning to think that God had blessed us with one child and that was it. But, I didnt have too much time to think about what the end results would be because everything was happening fast and they wanted to get me back into the OR quickly.
They wheeled me in and the last thing I remember is that 'I Touch Myself' by The Divinyls was playing on the radio in the OR (weird right?! LOL) and the guy was singing along to it! (also weird! lol) and he put the drugs into my IV and I was out. This was the first time I had ever been put to sleep. The next thing I remember is waking up and crying because I was confused and I was overwhelmed by everything that had happened so far. My husband was right there when they brought me back into recovery and Leah was still there, so that was comforting. I got lots of pain medication to help with all of the pain from both the c-section and the emergency surgery.
I was in surgery for about 3 hours and I had to get 2 bags of blood because I had lost so much of my own. They ended up having to re-open my c-section incision and then re-closing it. They did a complete D&C to get everything out of my uterus and they did find some left over tissue and the Dr said that the original stitches 'felt weird' so they re-did all of that. So I did not need a hysterectomy, Thank God.
Over night on Monday night into early Tuesday morning is all a bit of a blur. I was put into my own room but still in the recovery area. Leah kept checking on me. My husband was sleeping in the room on an extra bed. I woke up and threw up at one point. I remember the blood pressure cuff taking my blood pressure very often. I also remember that the IV site in the right arm was very painful and I begged Leah to take it out and she did since I had an IV site in the left arm too. I had a sore throat and kept having the urge to cough, they said this was because I had a breathing tube in my throat during the emergency surgery so it probably aggravated my throat. Every time I coughed it hurt my incision So badly. I remember not wanting to cough because I knew it would hurt.
Finally the next morning came and my OB doctor came in to check on me after everything that had happened. He couldnt believe that I went from no dilation at his office to fully dilated at the hospital less than 2 hours later. He also was concerned about the hemorrhage and was thankful I didnt need a hysterectomy. The nurse that took over for Leah was one of the same nurses from the afternoon before and was with my during my c-section so it was nice to see a familiar face. She fixed me some toast and got me some juice and then a little while later they finally brought me to my own room in the maternity section. I was so happy to be in my own room. The room I would stay in for the rest of my stay in the hospital. I was still hooked up to a lot of things. I had these things on my legs that inflated every couple minutes-those are to prevent blood clots. I still had the catheter in. and I still have the IV site in my left arm. So although I was hooked up to a lot and my body was still VERY swollen from all the IV fluids, I was happy that I was in my own room AND I was able to see my baby again! That was THE BEST thing in the world to finally see my baby boy again. I was able to hold him and feed him, although since I was in so much pain, my husband did a lot of the taking care of the baby and of course the nursery too. Tuesday was a tough day. I was still in a LOT of pain and couldn't even move.
We thought we were on the straight and narrow, but yet again, how wrong we were. I will write a new post about what happened in the days to come. This time, it wasn't me but rather our baby boy that had the issues that we never expected.
